When the midsize Kia Sorento first appeared, it featured a traditional, trucklike body-on-frame design that provided a level of ruggedness not typically found on crossover SUVs. Blessed with above-average off-roading and towing abilities, the V6-powered first-generation Sorento won our respect for its practical nature. It also boasted impressive value, offering the dimensions of a midsize SUV at a compact-crossover price point. But the original Sorento was clearly out of sync with the crossover craze. Most consumers want carlike unibody construction in their SUVs these days, so Kia decided to provide precisely that with its second- and third-generation Sorento models. These newer Sorentos are one of the best picks available for a small or midsize crossover SUV thanks to their choice of four-cylinder or V6 power, roomy interiors, available third-row seat and Kia’s extensive warranty package.

A redesigned crossover (car-based) Sorento (codename XMA) was launched in South Korea in 2009. It is Kia’s first model to be manufactured in the United States, in KIA’s new US$1 billion West Point, Georgia, factory (which also builds the sister vehicle to the Sorento, the Hyundai Santa Fe). The Sorento uses Kia’s new corporate grille, known as the Tiger Nose, as designed by Kia’s design .

The Kia Sorento is a mid-size SUV, launched in 2003. Sales of the Sorento have been strong, becoming Kia’s best-selling model in the United States. It was released at the same time as the Mitsubishi Outlander. The first generation Kia Sorento was a traditional truck-based (body-on-frame) SUV.
